Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Title of Site:

VoiceThread

Description of Site:

VoiceThread is a unique online chat/discussion medium that allows participants to contribute with traditional text, recorded audio or video, or additional uploads. Users can create a voice thread by uploading a photo, video, text document, or other file. Once other participants have viewed the uploaded file, he or she may begin to add comments or make suggestions for edits as they see fit. It is a new means for replacing the traditional online discussion that revolves around written responses.

VoiceThread has several different levels of subscription for individual users, schools, school districts, or higher education institutions. Individual, K-12 subscriptions start as low as $79 per year or $15 per month. Because users pay for access to the tool, subscribers do not need to worry about dealing with frequent or intrusive ads.

The whole purpose of the site is for users at all levels to share information and collaborate. Collaboration may be as simple as uploading text to a thread or as complex or producing a video. The collaboration is not as inclusive as Google Docs or another cloud-based document editor. Rather, it provides a forum to comment and discuss items so the file's owner can make changes if suggested.

VoiceThread does allow for multiple levels such as "teachers" and "students." The administrators (students) can control threads and edit/delete content as it is posted to the thread. This degree of control is not offered to standard users ("students"). The application is an appropriate tool for use in schools, both in the classroom and for out of class assignments. Students should be able to navigate and use the application with little difficulty starting at or around Grade 6, but maybe earlier depending on the cohort of students and nature of a class.

Educational Uses of Site

At different levels of education, VoiceThread has the opportunity to be useful in certain courses or topics. Likely as a student progresses from primary to secondary education, the uses of VoiceThread will expand. For example, in the earlier grades, VoiceThread may be used as a tool for crowd-sourcing and creating a story. The teacher may upload a picture and a brief introductory narrative and students would login and add to the story in segments. Then, in middle school students may collaborate to produce a team-created thread that discusses the implications of certain battles or decisions made in American History. Finally, in high school or secondary education, the tool may be used to continue point-counterpoint discussions that went beyond the allotted time in class.

The uniqueness of VoiceThread and its ability to allow for students to be part of conversation is many different manners makes it a strong tool for creativity both in and out of the classroom. IT can serve as a medium for collaboration on projects, to continue learning after an in class project has ended, or provide students access to teachers or experts to which they would not normally have access.

Review of Site

Once logged in to the VoiceThread website, it is extremely easy to use. The layout is simple and not overly complex or cluttered with unnecessary text or images. All navigation and comment buttons are clearly defined and accessible with one click of the mouse.

Users are presented with three tabs at login: Browse, Create, and MyVoice.

Browse allows users to view all VoiceThreads marked for public view. Users may comment on the posted file however they are comfortable. Users just need to click on the "Comment" button below the file and then how they want to comment (video, audio, text, drawing, or telephone).

Create allows users to post a file and then include their own comments. These may be introductions, focused-questions for other users, or a narrative of the inspiration for the file.

MyVoice is a tab where users can track and "subscribe" to different public (or privately shared) VoiceThreads.
